Proposal Strengthening research ethics governance and regulatory oversight in the Central America and the Caribbean region in response to the COVID-19 pandemic

Main output

A sub-regional statement on health research ethics for COVID-19 will facilitate a unite and common language and process, and set of principles based on regional needs and capabilities. This proposal is linked to a relevant short-term policy change, but also will contribute to a long-term improvement in health outcomes. Even though it is fundamental to fast track research review during epidemics, with a focus on rigor, this approach to research review should be maintained throughout and not just as an emergency issue. The best way to promote more research activities in the region is by creating a culture of research ethics review and oversight that is predictable, sustainable and relies on well-trained IRBs, strongly supported by their home institutions and committed to good practices.
