About: Abbas Abel Anzaku is a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Senior Program Officer at the Department of Clinical Laboratory Services, Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN). He has over seven years of hands-on experience in TB/HIV diagnostics and research, actively contributing to TB/HIV program implementation and health systems strengthening in Nigeria. His technical assistance to Tuberculosis Clinical and Laboratory Interface for Continuous Quality Improvement (TBCLICQI) has been instrumental in advancing diagnostic outcomes for TB patients and People Living with HIV (PLHIV). Abbas coordinated the laboratory workflow for a European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP)-funded project that assessed mycobacterium tuberculosis infection rates among healthcare workers in HIV clinics in Northcentral Nigeria. This study further explored cytokine expression level in this cohort, and he presented the outcome of the study in scientific conferences in South Africa, Ethiopia and Kenya. He holds a master’s degree in clinical microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CMID) from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Nigeria, and is a doctoral researcher in Molecular Biology and Genomics from the same institution, where his research focuses on developing immunologic and genetic models for personalized treatment for TB and TB vaccine trials. He collaborates with researchers from India to identify cancer biomarkers effective in TB-cancer comorbidity treatment. He is a reviewer for PLOS Public Health Journals, Elsevier Journals, and Pan Africa Medical Journals, contributing his expertise to the peer-review process. Abbas has received travel fellowships from the From the Open Targets Hackathon, Wellcome Genome Campus, UK; Wellcome Connecting Science (WCS) the Gambia; the EU-Africa PerMed Project-Kenya; the US-National Institute of Health (NIH); the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE) South Africa; EMBL and the H3Africa Consortium, and has presented his research at numerous international forums. He is the National Coordinator for the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) Students Council Regional Group in Nigeria, where he organizes genomics and bioinformatics workshops, and serves on the committee of the Young Investigators Forum (YIF) of the African Society for Human Genetics (AfSHG). He is a member of several scientific bodies, including the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), the PHA4GE, the AfSHG, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Nigerian Society of Microbiology (NSM), the Nigerian Immunology and Infection Network (NIIT), the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society (NIDS), and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM). As a change maker, Humble has been very instrumental in mentoring the youths on good governance and women's inclusivity in leadership. He is currently the Nasarawa State Convention Chairman of the National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN). Abbas received a prestigious ambassadorial induction from the Arewa Peace Ambassadors Forum, a position to empower him to advocate peace and good governance among the youths.
